My Thoughts

I enjoyed this series. It displayed an honest portrayal of race relations, for every character who's behaviour was abhorrent, there was equally those who were warm and welcoming. There were scenes that displayed problems where now different cultures have learnt to coexist. For example, when Hosanna was singing in Church she was treated unkindly. (Having come from a choral tradition I think this scene would have been more realistic if there was a strong traditional choir that Hosanna's voice was "competing with", as it sounded like only a few other voices were singing I can't imagine the same reaction would happen - but of course I was not alive at that time) Churches have since grown with a Gospel music tradition. The Coronation service of King Charles III featured a gospel choir.

I like the fact that all the characters were complex, Hosanna was hiding the shame of a father who let her down and was not the saint she believed him to be. Leah open to love although still married to her abusive husband. Chantrelle, full of joy and reaching for the stars but losing confidence when having to deal with the behaviour of a man who's actions were sadly predictable from practically their first interaction.

I hope there will be a series 2.
